Overcoming Redundancy

One of the biggest threats to job security today is redundancy in the workplace. With the dawn of the digital age, technological advancements in every area are making certain task specific roles unnecessary. Computing software and machines are now taking over what people used to be required to do.

This may be good news for businesses in terms of productivity and profit margins but it’s bad news for those people who are being replaced. This is especially so if they have worked their whole lives honing the skill that is no longer required. Overcoming redundancy is something that will take a lot of time and dedication on the part of the employee. It may not guarantee that you will not be replaced by a machine but it will guarantee that you will not be without a job for long.

Keeping an eye on changes in your industry is a good place to begin. Read up on technological advancements that are edging their way into your line of work and how it affects you. If the trend is moving toward computing areas of work that used to be person based, then it would be a good idea to start educating yourself.

This would entail taking courses and researching the software and other expertise required to perhaps set up implementation and roll outs of new software and machinery. Professional consultants usually specialize in one specific kind of software, focusing on a certain business sector. They then contract themselves to different companies to assist with the implementation of that software. Training of staff is also often involved.

The point is that if you feel your job could be taken over by a piece of machinery or software, learn about that machinery or software so that you become valuable again. This means that although you won’t be required to physically do that job any longer, your skills will be needed in order for the company to implement it effectively.

This is just one of the ways in which you can overcome redundancy in the workplace. Always take time to update your skills set and stay ahead of the game. That way, your expertise will be of value no matter what advancements are made technologically.
